Samuel Read Levine

Lyric tenor Samuel Read Levine is a native of Boston, and a graduate of the Oberlin Conservatory of Music. He made his debut with Opera Theatre of Saint Louis in 2008, singing the role of Andres in The Tales of Hoffmann under the baton of Stephen Lord, and gave several performances at the Tanglewood Music Center, under the supervision of James Levine. He returns to OTSL in 2009 to sing the role of Léon in The Ghosts of Versailles, and makes role debuts as Ferrando in Cosi fan tutte with North Bay Opera, and as Alfred in Die Fledermaus with San Francisco Lyric Opera. Other recent credits include Malcolm in Macbeth with Dayton Opera, Schubert’s Winterreise with Classical Revolution, and Bach’s Kantata 163 at Tanglewood, conducted by John Harbison, and his roles include Nemorino in L’Elisir d’Amore.

Mr. Levine’s other training includes the Gerdine Young Artist Program of OTSL, the Chautauqua Voice Institute, the Aspen Opera Theater Center, and the Sommerakademie Mozarteum of Salzburg, among others, and he was a Vocal Fellow at Tanglewood in 2008. He has received awards from The Irma M. Cooper Opera Columbus Competition, The Anna Sosenko Assist Trust, as well as his alma mater, and participates as Semi-finalist in Houston Grand Opera’s Eleanor McCullom Competition for Young Singers later this year. Mr. Levine is based in San Francisco since 2007, where he studies with Cesar Ulloa.
