John Irvin

New England Finalist 2011

Originally trained as a pianist, Atlanta tenor John Irvin began his vocal studies in 2007 with world renowned tenor Richard Clement. He earned his Bachelors of Music summa cum laude from Georgia State University and is in his first year at Boston University’s Opera Institute under Sharon Daniels.

 

Operatic highlights include Don Jose (Carmen), L’Aumonier (Dialogues of the Carmelites), Singer #7 (Transformations), King Kaspar (Amahl and the Night Visitors) and the Governor (Candide) at Georgia State University. John also covered Anatol in Barber’s Vanessa at the Opera Institute. This past summer, John was a studio artist at Central City Opera, where he performed scenes from Bizet’s Carmen, Hoiby’s A Month in the Country, Verdi’s La Traviata and Rigoletto. In the summer of 2009, John toured the Marche & Emilia-Romagna regions of Italy as B.F. Pinkerton in Puccini’s Madama Butterfly.


A versatile singer, John has also performed many oratorio works, including Puccini’s Messa di Gloria, Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Magnificat, Mendelssohn’s Elijah and Mozart’s Vesperae Solennes de Confessore.


Throughout his studies, John has appeared in master classes with David Daniels, Peter Strummer, George Shirley, Harry Bickett and Benton Hess.


John’s future plans include performing the roles of Nick in Paulus’ The Postman Always Rings Twice and Romeo in Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette, both with Boston University’s Opera Institute. This summer, John will participate in The Santa Fe Opera Apprentice Program, covering roles in Puccini’s La Boheme and Menotti’s The Last Savage.
