Julia Mintzer
Mezzo-soprano
New England Finalist 2012

Hailed by Montreal’s La Presse as “…a true Carmen: extremely sensual, with the grace of a serpent, the violence of a tiger, and a mezzo of penetrating depth," mezzo-soprano Julia Mintzer is preparing for a full season of widely varied repertoire.  She will join Washington National Opera as a Domingo-Cafritz Young Artist for the 2012-13 season, and Santa Fe Opera this summer as a member of their Apprentice Program.  This spring, she will sing the title role in La Tragédie de Carmen with Dayton Opera.

Recently, Ms. Mintzer performed Stephano in Roméo et Juliette with Dayton Opera, Rachmaninoff songs with the Britten Pears Young Artist Programme, and Zulma in L’Italiana in Algeri with Boston Midsummer Opera, also covering Isabella. Her turn as Alto Soloist in Handel’s Messiah with Boston Baroque was described by Steven Ledbetter as “outstanding…Julia Mintzer in particular stood out.” (Boston Musical Intelligencer.)

An alumna of the Boston University Opera Institute, The Juilliard School, and Wolf Trap Opera Studio, roles include Meg Page, Brook’s Carmen, Dorabella, Dinah in Trouble in Tahiti, and the title roles in Thérèse Raquin and The Mother of Us All.  Ms. Mintzer has taken First Prize in the Kennet Symphony Voice Competition and the Austrian American Society Competition, was a semifinalist in the Opera Birmingham Competiton, and a finalist in the American Bach Society Competition.

Also an active stage director, Ms. Mintzer’s productions have been commended for their “striking ideas” and “wonderfully dark gesture[s]”. Her La Cenerentola for Bel Cantanti Opera was described as “wildly funny… just the sort of thing that keeps opera alive and relevant.” (BrightestYoungThings.com)  Credits include Dido and Aeneas for Hubbard Hall Opera Theater, Alcina for Satori Opera, Il Tabarro for Garden State Opera, and Atra for Morningside Opera (asst.) She will return to Morningside Opera next season to direct Caccini’s La liberazione di Ruggiero.
