Amal El-Shrafi
New England Finalist 2013

Twenty-five year old soprano Amal El-Shrafi grew up in Randolph, Massachusetts and received a B.M. in Music Education and a B.A. in Vocal Performance from the University of New Hampshire, studying voice under Dr. Jenni Cook. During her undergraduate career, roles with the Opera Workshop program included The Queen of the Night (Die Zauberflöte), Dido (Dido and Aeneas), and Cunégonde (Candide). Amal was an integral part of the arts community in the seacoast area of New Hampshire, revisiting the title role in Dido and Aeneas with Portsmouth Pro Musica’s first operatic endeavor. She also placed as a finalist in the 2009 New Hampshire Opera Idol competition, hosted by Lakes Region Opera, and was a two-time award winner in the New Hampshire chapter of NATS. She was also invited and performed for Governor John Lynch.

After moving back to Boston, Amal was an elementary music teacher for a year, teaching grades K-6, and running the choral activities at her school. At this time, Ms. El-Shrafi began private voice lessons with baritone, Michael Meraw, a member of the voice faculty of New England Conservatory. She also became an active member in the Tanglewood Festival Chorus with the Boston Symphony Orchestra and made her Symphony Hall debut, singing the part of Ancilla in the St. John Passion in April 2011 under Maestro Masaaki Suzuki. She is now currently pursuing a Master of Music degree in Vocal Performance at the New England Conservatory of Music, continuing her studies with Mr. Meraw. Recent roles with NEC include Moppet the Cat (Paul Bunyan), Susannah (Susannah), and Outreach Opera performances of Lauretta (Dr. Miracle) and Amy (Diver City) with the Community Partnerships Program. Upcoming engagements with NEC include Miss Jessel (Turn of the Screw) this February. Amal will compete as a finalist in the Classical Singer Competition in May and is a Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions Regional Finalist.
