Anne Ewers

2001 Semi-finals Judge

Ms. Anne Ewers is the General Director of Utah Opera. Anne was chosen in 1991 over 54 other applicants for this position. The Board of Directors immediately recognized and were impressed by her vitality and enthusiasm, recognizing that her experience was tailor-made for Utah Opera's needs.

Just prior to coming to Utah Opera Anne was General Director of the Boston Lyric Opera Company, and served there with outstanding fiscal and artistic success. Anne is also an opera stage director with more than 50 opera productions to her credit, with companies throughout the US and Canada. Anne holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Theatre, a Bachelor of Music Degree and a Masters Degree in Music in Opera Production from the University of Texas at Austin.

 

Under Anne's very capable leadership Utah Opera has in the past 8 years expanded the Fiscal Year budget from $1.5 million. to $4.1 million, while operating deficit-free. She commissioned & produced the world premier opera, Dream Keepers, for the 1996 Utah Centennial, to international acclaim. She expanded the season from three productions a year to four, and expanded the subscription base from 50 to 75 % thus generating sold out performances since 1994.

 

Ms. Ewers received national recognition for programs designed for the hearing and visually impaired; established a state-wide grade K-12 education/community outreach residency program, five-day community wide residencies in remote rural areas, and at-risk school to work programs; exceeded the $1.9 million capital campaign goal for the purchase of a 40k sq ft facility to house Utah Opera's production, music, and education departments; and established a rental business for costumes/sets/ & construction, serving opera companies across North America.
