John Fisher

2001 Final Judge

John Fisher has been a member of the Metropolitan Opera's Artistic Staff since 1997. As Director of Music Administration, Mr. Fisher works closely with Maestro Levine in overseeing all musical activities in the Opera House, particularly the musical preparation of performances. A native of Glasgow, Scotland, Mr. Fisher has worked in many of the world's leading opera houses. From 1983 to 1985 he was artistic administrator at Venice's La Fenice, where he was named Artistic Director in 1989, a position he held until 1992. He joined the Teatro alla Scala in 1978, serving as head of the music staff and later, Artistic Administrator; from 1983 to 1988 he was head of music for Pesaro's Rossini Festival. In addition, he has served on the music staffs of the Welsh National Opera, London Opera Centre, Brussel's La monnaie, Amsterdam's Netherlands Opera, and Festival Canada in Ottowa. He is currently Director of Vocal Recordings and Executive Producer at Deutsche Grammophone in Hamburg, Germany, a position he has held since 1994.
