Christopher Hahn joined Pittsburgh Opera as the new Artistic Director on July 1, 2000. Prior to his position with Pittsburgh Opera, he was with Los Angeles Opera, where he had been a part of general director Pete Hemmings' artistic team for the last four years, as Artistic Administrator.Classically trained as a stage director and actor in his native South Africa, Mr. Hahn began his career in opera in 1983, when he joined San Francisco Opera, and became Rehearsal Administrator, Mr. Hahn then ran the San Francisco Opera Center, which includes the world-renowned Merola Opera Program, the country's leading training program for American singers. During his thirteen years with the company, Mr. Hahn directed a series of successful productions for the Center. Mr. Hahn's expertise in recognizing young vocal talent has made him a much-sought-after jurist on various American and international vocal competitions, including the Bernstein Competition (Jerusalem), Plácido Domingo's Operalia Competition, the Francisco Vinas Competition (Barcelona), the Macallister Awards, and the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
