Kevin Murphy

2004 District Judge


Kevin Murphy joined the Metropolitan Opera music staff in 1993 as the first pianist invited by Maestro James Levine to participate in their Young Artist Development Program. He has played continuo harpsichord with the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra in productions of Così fan tutte, La Cenerentola, Le Nozze di Figaro, Don Giovanni, La Clemenza di Tito, and Idomeneo.

 

Murphy made his conducting debut with the Musica Sacra Chamber Orchestra of Denver during the 1999-2000 season. He has been musical assistant and played continuo harpsichord for the Seiji Ozawa Opera Project in Japan for two seasons and returns as an assistant conductor in 2003. Last season, he conducted rehearsals for Edo de Waart at the Netherlands Opera for their new production of Béatrice et Bénédict; he returns this year for Strauss' Der Rosenkavalier.

 

Kevin Murphy received his bachelor's degree in piano performance from Indiana University as a student of Menahem Pressler and James Tocco. He also has a master's degree in piano accompanying from the Curtis Institute. Murphy makes his home in New York City with his wife, Heidi Grant Murphy, and their two children.
