John Churchwell

2005 Regional Judge

John Churchwell pursues a career both on the concert stage and in the nation's leading opera houses. Churchwell is assistant conductor for the Metropolitan Opera. He is also a member of the music staff of the San Francisco Opera. Former associations include Wolf Trap Opera, Berkshire Opera, Minnesota Opera and Minnesota Orchestra. A champion of American music, recent projects have included the world premieres of John Harbison's The Great Gatsby and Jake Heggie's Dead Man Walking.

On the recital stage, Mr. Churchwell maintains active partnerships with some of the most sought-after vocalists including Carol Vaness, Dawn Upshaw, Anthony Dean Griffey, Stephanie Blythe and Anna Netrebko.

Mr. Churchwell holds a bachelor of music in piano from New England Conservatory, a bachelor of arts in French from Tufts University, and a master of music in accompanying from the University of Minnesota.
