Preliminary Judge
Susannah Waters trained at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and
at the National Opera Studio, under the sponsorship of Glyndebourne Festival
Opera. She has sung with Scottish Opera (Pamina in Die Zauberflote,
Nannetta in Falstaff), Welsh National Opera (Despina in Cosi
Fan Tutte, Dalinda in Handel's Ariodante, and the Fairy Godmother
in Massenet's Cendrillon), Opera Northern Ireland (Gilda in Rigoletto),
Glyndebourne Festival Opera (Papegena, First Niece in Peter Grimes,
and most recently, Cherubino under the baton of Sir Charles Mackerras),
and the Royal Opera House (Cupid in Purcell's King Arthur). King
Arthur was also performed at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, and recorded
by Harmonia Mundi with Willima Christie and Les Arts Florissants.
Recently, her career has taken her repeatedly to America, where she has
sung with the Los Angeles Music Center Opera (Atalanta in Handel's Xerxes,
Olga in Giordano's Fedora), Seattle Opera (Xerxes and Adele
in Die Fledermaus), Boston Lyric Opera (Xerxes and Elissa
in Mozart's Il Re Pastore), Santa Fe Opera (Blonde in Die Entfuhrung
aus dem Serail), and New York City Opera (Xerxes). Other operatic
appearances include performances at the Vienna Volksoper (Philine in Thomas'Mignon),
Drottningholm (Belinda in Dido & Aeneas), and the Canadian Opera
Company (Xerxes).
She has been heard in concert with the BBC Orchestra (Lulu), the
RPO (Fledermaus), BBC National Orchestra of Wales (Mozart Mass
in C Minor, Mozart Reqiuem, Bach Mass in B Minor),
the Halle Orchestra and the Finnish Radio Orchestra. On British television,
she has appeared as Cherubino in Channel Four's The Marriage of Figaro,
and singing Gilda and Nannetta in A Life of Verdi, conducted by
Mark Elder and directed by David Alden. She has also recorded Belinda
in Dido & Aeneas with the Boston Baroque under Martin Pearlman.
