Diana
McVey
Soprano
New England Finalist 2003
Diana McVey, soprano, has sung leading roles with the Rhode Island Philharmonic,
Ocean State Light Opera, and the Bel Canto Opera Company among others
and has appeared as soloist with the Rhode Island Philharmonic, the Rhode
Island Civic Chorale & Orchestra, Opera Providence, the Longwood Symphony
and the Florida West Coast Symphony. She sang the role of Anna in the
world premiere of Richard Cumming's opera The Picnic with the Trinity
Repertory Company. This versatile soprano is equally at home in opera,
oratorio and recital, and her repertoire ranges from standard opera repertoire
to world premieres. Her roles include Adalgisa in Bellini's Norma,
Laetitia in Gian-Carlo Menotti's The Old Maid and the Thief, Susanna
in The Marriage of Figaro, Despina in Così fan tutte,
Constanze in Abduction from the Seraglio, and Gretel in Hansel & Gretel.
Orchestral repertoire includes works by Carl Orff, Leonard Bernstein,
Richard Cumming and Henryk Górecki, and the oratorios of Handel,
Haydn, Mozart, Honegger and J.S. Bach. In 1999 she was a prize-winner
in the prestigious Bel Canto Opera Competition. In 2001 she was an apprentice
in the Sarasota Opera Apprentice Artists Program where she covered the
role of Olympia in The Tales of Hoffmann. Recently Ms. McVey performed
Górecki's Symphony No. 3 with the Longwood Symphony at Jordan
Hall, Boston, the role of Calla in the world premiere of John Sumerlin's
opera Air and Haydn's Creation with the Rhode Island Civic Chorale & Orchestra. Upcoming engagements include Mozart's Requiem with the Rhode Island Civic Chorale & Orchestra and productions of
Thomas Adés' Powder Her Face with the Boston Academy of
Music Opera Company and Boston Modern Orchestra Project and Così fan tutte with the Salt Marsh Opera.
In the summer of 2002, she spent three weeks working with Sherrill Milnes,
Maria Spacagna, Fritz Weaver, Rochelle Oliver and Tony Randall as part
of the V.O.I.C.Experience program in Orlando, Florida. Ms. McVey was also
a 2002 Lake George Opera Apprentice Artist where she covered the role
of Constanze in Abduction from the Seraglio. Ms. McVey is a student
of Maria Spacagna.
