Meachem
baritone
New England Finalist 2003
A former student in the Eastman School of Music, baritone Lucas Meachem
is currently working on his Artist Certificate at Yale University. In
the Summer of 2002 he worked with Central City Opera where he covered
the role of Escamillo (Carmen) and performed the roles of Tom/John
(The Face on the Barroom Floor). During the summers of 1999-2001
Lucas was performing with The Ohio Light Opera. He has been seen in over
20 shows there including Carousel, Sari, Camelot, The Pirates of Penzance,
and Utopia Limited. Lucas has recorded several shows with The
Ohio Light Opera, the most notable being Sari in which Lucas sang
the role of Pali Racz. The magazine Opera News said of that recording "the strong cast was galvanized by the massive-voiced baritone Lucas
Meachem's highly emotional portrayal of old Pali." On top of these
venues Lucas has also performed such roles as Marcello (La Bohème)
and the title role in Gianni Schicchi with the Eastman Opera Theatre.
Upcoming engagements include the role of the Count in Le Nozze di
Figaro with the Yale Opera Program, and Baron Zeta in The Merry
Widow. This summer Lucas will be performing Charlot in Angelique
and Mr. Gobineau in The Medium with the Merola Opera Program in
San Francisco.
Lucas has been a winner in many competitions across the United States
including The Mario Lanza Competition(2001), The Jessie Kneisel Competition
(2002), The West Palm Beach Opera Competition (2001, 2002), The Orpheus
Competition(2002), The Crescendo Music Awards (2001), The Charlotte Opera
Guild Competition (2000, 2001, 2002), The Opera Index Competition (2001),
The George London Competition(2002), and The Bel Canto Competition (2002).
Lucas Meachem has also been a state winner in The Metropolitan National
Council Competition in Charlotte, NC and in New Haven, CT (2001, 2002).
In the spring of 2002 Lucas won an Encouragement award at the Regional
Metropolitan National Council Competition in Atlanta, GA.
