Christina
Tannous
Soprano
New England Finalist 2003
Christina's talent came to international attention as the first prize
winner of the 1999 CBC Competition for Young Performers. She is the recipient
of many awards and bursaries including the Jean A. Chalmers Award, given
by the Canadian Opera Women's Committee, and the prize for the best interpretation
of a selected Canadian work at the CBC competition. These successes were
followed by a second placing at the Jaume Aragall International Voice
Competition in Spain.
Christina has been a soloist with various Canadian orchestras, such as
the National Arts Center Orchestra, the Montreal Symphony Orchestra and
the Orchestre Métropolitain. Her voluptuous voice is appreciated
in opera, oratorio and recital repertoire, and is often broadcast by the
CBC and SRC radio networks for " Jeunes Artistes," " Music
Around Us," " Debut Atlantic," and " Les Radio-Concerts
du Centre Pierre-Péladeau."
Particularly active in recital, Christina regularly sings in her hometown
of Montreal, in Toronto, and in the Maritime provinces. She has performed
Handel's The Messiah, Vaughan William's Dona nobis pacem,
Pergolesi's Stabat Mater, Haydn's The Creation, Orff's Carmina
Burana and other Oratorio works. At the opera, we have heard her sing
Monica in Menotti's The Medium conducted by Agnès Grossmann
at the Orford Festival in 2000. In the spring of 2001, Christina sang
the part of Anaide in Il cappello di paglia di Firenze by Nino
Rota at the Vienna Kammeroper. And in the fall of that year, she sang
the parts of Zibbédé and Inésille in the world-premiere
of the opera Manuscrit trouvé à Saragosse by Jose
Evangelista, in Montreal.
Christina's 2002-2003 season includes her debut at the Québec
city opera singing the part of Nadia (Valencienne) in the French version
of The Merry Widow conducted by Bernard Labadie. She will also
perform Haydn's The Seasons with the Orchestre Métropolitain
in Montreal, Carmina Burana with the Quebec city orchestra and
the Trois-Rivières orchestra, as well as opera arias and duets
with the Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean orchestra.
Born in Montreal in 1975, Christina Tannous graduated from the Conservatoire
de Musique de Montréal and studies with Marie Daveluy.
