Soprano
New England Finalist, 2001
A native of Potomac, Maryland, soprano Sol Kim began her academic career
in Film Studies, graduating magna cum laude from Yale University while
studying voice with Jane Dutton and Jerold Siena. In 1999, she received
two Master's Degrees with Academic Honors and Distinction in Performance
in Opera and Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory in Boston,
where she studied voice with Susan Clickner and Kathleen Kaun, and opera
with John Moriarty. While at NEC, Ms. Kim sang in Master Classes with
Warren Jones, Pierre Vallet, and Martin Isepp. Recent performances include
Zerlina in Don Giovanni with Longwood Opera, Lucy Lockit in The
Beggar's Opera with Harvard Lowell House Opera, and Susanna in The
Marriage of Figaro with Longwood Opera. Last summer, Sol was an Apprentice
Artist with Central City Opera, where she performed Sister Mathilde and
covered Blanche de la Force in Dialogues of the Carmelites. This
fall, she was an artist-in-residence with Central City Opera for their "Opera in the Rockies" tour of Colorado and Wyoming.
In 1998, Ms. Kim won 2nd place in NEC's Voice Department Concerto Competition.
She was the 3rd place winner in the 1998 New England Regional Metropolitan
Opera National Council Auditions, where she was also awarded the Iride
Pilla Memorial Award.
Ms. Kim is a student of Patricia Craig. This summer, she will tour Europe
as the soloist in a concert of arias with the Worcester Youth Symphony
Orchestra. She has just been accepted as a Spectrum Resident Artist with
Virginia Opera, where she will sing for the 2001-2002 season.
