Laura Choi Stuart
Soprano
New England Finalist, 2006

Hailed as “a lyric soprano of ravishing quality” by the Boston Globe, soprano Laura Choi Stuart is one of opera’s rising American talents. In the summer of 2006, Laura will be a member of the Apprentice Program for Singers with The Santa Fe Opera, understudying the role of Micaela in Carmen. Other engagements this year include a debut with Intermezzo Chamber Opera as Miriam in Hoiby’s The Scarf and outreach performances with Lake George Opera’s Opera To Go program. The 2005 recipient of Boston Lyric Opera’s Stephen Shrestinian Award for Excellence, Laura also made her professional debut with that company in 2004 as Elvira in L’Italiana in Algeri. She returned to the B.L.O. stage as The Rose in the East Coast Premiere of Rachel Portman’s The Little Prince, and toured the Northeast as Pamina in Opera New England’s The Magic Flute. Laura made her debut with Opera Boston in 2005 in the role of Anna Gomez in Menotti’s The Consul. She has also been a regular performer with the Berkshire Opera Company under the direction of Mo. Kathleen Kelly. She was a member of the Resident Artist Program at B.O.C. twice, performing the roles of Carolina in Cimarosa’s The Secret Marriage and Laetitia in The Old Maid and the Thief, and in 2005 made her mainstage debut with Berkshire Opera in the role of Gianetta in L’Elisir d’Amore. A 2004 graduate of the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, where she received the Joan and Henry Wheeler Presidential Scholarship, Laura was active in both opera and concert, performing the roles of Pamina, Calisto, and Gretel, collaborating on multiple occasions with the N.E.C. Contemporary Ensemble, and singing Berlioz’s Les Nuits d’Eté in 2003 as winner of the Vocal Concerto Competition. Laura’s interest in opera began during her undergraduate work at Dartmouth College when she was invited to participate as a Studio Artist in Opera North’s summer apprenticeship. She has also performed extensively on outreach tours throughout New England with both Opera North and Opera New England. Laura grew up in Carlisle, Pennsylvania after spending early childhood in Germany and Italy.
