Ji Young Yang

JI YOUNG YANG, soprano, a native of Korea, is second-year of Graduate Diploma student at New England Conservatory of Music. Ms. Yang is a recipient of a presidential scholarship (Wendy Shattuck voice fund). She studies with Ms Patricia Misslin. Ms. Yang earned her master’s and bachelor’s degree at Manhattan School of Music in the studio of Ms. Misslin. Before she came to U.S., she attended Seoul National University in Korea as a student of Hye-Yeon Seo. Ms. Yang participated in Salzburg summer festival, where, at age sixteen, she studied with Thomas Quasthoff. She made her operatic debut as Sandrina from Mozart’s La Finta Giardiniera at Bay Area Opera Theater. In May of 2002, she made her New York debut as Servilia in Warren Jones’s production from Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito conducted by Julius Rudel at Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in Manhattan. In November of 2002, Ms. Yang appeared as Mademoiselle Silberklang in Mozart’s The Impresario in the Opera Scenes production at Manhattan School of Music under the baton of Steven Osgood. She also appeared at concerts Brahms songs and ensemble and Italian repertoire ensemble in Warren Jones’s seminars at Manhattan School of Music in 2002-2003. In the Spring of 2003, she made her New York operatic debut as Héro from Berlioz’s Béatrice et Bénédict at the Opera Theater of Manhattan School of Music conducted by Laurent Pillot and under the direction of Christopher Mattaliano. In December of 2003, she also appeared as Peaseblosom from A Midsummer Night’s Dream at Manhattan School of Music Opera Theater. In April of 2004, she sang Livia from Caldara’s Il Giuoco del Quadriglio under the direction of Kenneth Cooper with Baroque ensemble at Manhattan School of Music. In summer of 2004, Ms. Yang participated and sang at Songfest summer program, where, she studied with Graham Johnson, Martin Katz and John Harbison. In July of 2005, Ms. Yang also participated Musica Antiqua Baroque music competition in Brugge of Belgium. In December of 2005, Ms. Yang sang Beth from Mark Adamo’s Little Women at the Opera Theater of New England Conservatory of Music conducted by Douglas Kinney-Frost and under the direction of Marc Astefan and she also appeared Warren Jones’s master class at New England Conservatory. Her upcoming performance is Despina from Mozart’s Cosi fan Tutte in March at New England Conservatory Opera Theater. In this summer, Ms. Yang will participate Merola opera program of San Francisco opera.
