Since graduating with a Bachelor’s degree from the Boston Conservatory in 2003, this young soprano has made concert and stage appearances around the world. Ms. Harmer has been a soloist at the Schubert Festival, with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, and was recently asked to return to her alma mater to sing the “Jeremiah Symphony” and “Ah, Perfido” with their orchestra. She has been a soloist with the Boston Conservatory Chorale, the New England Philharmonic, and the International Children’s Choir. Ms. Harmer was also a featured soloist with the Fleet Boston Celebrity Series in 2003. In 2002 and 2003 Ms. Harmer attended Music Academy of the West, studying with Marilyn Horne and Warren Jones. While there, Ms. Harmer was an active participant in the opera program, singing roles in L’Enfant et les Sortileges and Albert Herring, among others. Other early roles included Volupia (L’Egisto), Rosina (Il Barbiere di Siviglia), Giovanna (Rigoletto), and Female Chorus (The Rape of Lucretia). In 2003, Ms. Harmer joined the Gerdine Young Artist Program at Opera Theater of St. Louis, was one of nine singers invited to study at the Music Academy in Villecroze, France, and attended the prestigious Merola opera program at San Francisco Opera. While in concert in San Francisco as Mimi, she was described as “utterly glowing” by San Francisco Classical Voice.
Ms. Harmer is the recipient of many awards. In 2005, she was awarded the top prize at the George London Foundation Competition. In 2004, she was the first-place winner of the Palm Beach Opera Competition. She has received awards from the Fritz & Lavinia Jensen Foundation and the Marilyn Horne Foundation. In 2003 and 2004, Ms. Harmer received awards from the Metropolitan National Council Auditions: first as a mezzo, then as a soprano. In 2004, Ms. Harmer entered the Lindemann Young Artist Program at the Metropolitan Opera. The 2005-06 season saw her at the Met in Le Nozze di Figaro and Parsifal, as well as her Carnegie Hall debut. This summer, she played Mimi to much acclaim in Utah Festival Opera’s La Boheme. In the fall she will return to OperaBoston as the conniving Vitellia in Mozart’s La Clemenza di Tito, but not before appearing in concert in New York with famed tenor Ben Heppner. She will return to the Met during the holiday season to sing First Lady in The Magic Flute.
